Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California is investigating allegations brought by California whistleblowers regarding Jennifer Siebel Newsom's taxes; Newsom's former chief of staff, Dana Williamson; and potentially some of the state House staff, sources said.
The investigation first came to light when Newsom posted a pre-recorded clip on social media on Monday accusing President Donald Trump of ordering the FBI and Justice Department to pursue the case against him because he was considering running for president in 2028.
Newsom was a wealthy man when he made his first big foray into politics as mayor of San Francisco in 2004.
Newsom was worth about $6.9 million, largely due to his stake in a lucrative wine business and hospitality that he founded on his back.

The two later had a falling out after Newsom's ties to Father Getty caused "resentment," the governor previously suggested.
Plumpjack has expanded into wineries, restaurants and hotels.
The governor's political standing has benefited Plumpjack, and The Post previously reported that $50,000 of donor money has been spent on the company's business.
Newsom and his wife bought a 12,600-square-foot home in Fair Oaks for $3.7 million, and borrowed $2.7 million, according to state records, in 2018, just before he became governor.
The family purchased The Kentfield Mansion in Marin County, 20 miles north of San Francisco, which they purchased for $9.1 million, with a $6.5 million mortgage, in late 2024.
The family returned so their four children could attend local private schools.
Newsom has also written several books, the most recent being his self-titled memoir “Young Man in a Hurry,” which is believed to be a precursor to a possible presidential run in 2028.
Newsom even used his political action committee to spend $1.6 million to bulk buy his own book.
The forms showed he earned more than $100,000 from publishing and royalty payments.
His podcasts, also seen as a sign of a possible presidential bid, have not generated any income for the governor, as he cannot accrue income from them while in office, according to the disclosures.
Much of the intrigue in the Justice Department investigation appears to center on his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who also criticized the investigation as unpresidential behavior.
He has his own blind trust with at least $1 million in holdings.
Siebel Newsom is involved with the Representation Project, a feminist nonprofit organization, where she earns more than $150,000 as a founder.
That nonprofit also donated about $150,000 annually to Siebel Newsom's media production company, Girls Club Enterta.
