President Trump announced Saturday that he will nominate retired Oklahoma State Trooper Lance Schroyer to be the new director of ICE, calling him a patriot with experience locking up “the worst of the worst.” "Lance has over 29 YEARS of law enforcement experience in Oklahoma," Trump wrote in Truth Social, noting that he won every county in the state in three successive elections.

The agency has not had a Senate-confirmed director since 2017, amid angry partisan clashes over immigration enforcement.

Trump called Schroyer a “PATRIOT with real operational experience and a proven leader with DECADES of experience locking up the worst of the worst, including spearheading 287g partnerships between law enforcement and ICE!” He noted Schoyer's firsthand experience taking “illegal aliens off our streets” and said, like Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, “LOVE the men and women of ICE.” Mullin, whom the Senate confirmed as Homeland Security secretary, stepped in after Trump ousted his predecessor Kristi Noem.

Former acting ICE Director Todd Lyons announced his resignation in April, following the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January amid anti-ICE protests.

Trump called on the Senate, on recess for the week of July 4, to confirm Schroyer immediately.

Horrified Air Canada passengers began praying when their pilot suffered an apparent seizure and the plane swerved violently before the flight made an emergency landing at Boston's Logan Airport.

Witness Rodney McDonald said it appeared the pilot of the flight, operated by Air Canada regional partner PAL Airlines, appeared to have a seizure after the plane left Newark, New Jersey, at 12:39 p.m.

"The moment the plane turned, I knew something was wrong because it wasn't turbulence," McDonald told ABC News.

McDonald said he, his wife and two children were among the 61 customers aboard the flight bound for Halifax, Canada.

"The first officer took control of the plane and diverted the flight to Boston, where it landed safely," the company added.

Ambulances surrounded the plane after it landed and the plane was towed to a gate.

Kansas City police believe they have found the body of the gunman suspected of killing a person in a series of highway shootings Wednesday inside the burned basement of a relative's home, where police searched days earlier.

Oscar Sanchez-Muñoz, 22, was wanted for allegedly shooting at a motor vehicle on June 11 in Wyandotte County, Kansas, and had an outstanding warrant in the same county for aggravated assault, which carries a $100,000 bond, according to the FBI.

He was also the main suspect in five shootings on June 16 along Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Missouri, just a few miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where several FIFA World Cup matches were being held.

Police said Sánchez-Muñoz's relatives found a body Wednesday in the basement of the Independence, Missouri, home.

The body was wearing clothing that matched that of Sánchez Muñoz, who police believed had initially escaped during a fire that broke out in the middle of the June 16 standoff, Kansas City police Capt.

Jake Becchina said, according to KMBC.

Law enforcement had searched the home during the investigation after the standoff, but it was nearly impossible to thoroughly search the basement, flooded with water after the fire and filled with furniture and trash.

"At the end of the fire, there were several feet of water inside the basement, that night and into the next day," Becchina said, calling it "one of the most congested basements" he has seen in his law enforcement career.

"There was enough debris there that you couldn't get up.

It was piles of stuff." He also noted that the staircase leading to the basement had collapsed in the fire and that investigators had to “jump” down to search.

The family had returned to the home several times since the confrontation and fire, and it was while sifting through piles of debris that they noticed the smell of decomposition, which led them to the remains before contacting police, Becchina said.

He added that the body was out of sight, under the mess and that a “significant amount” of manpower was needed to clear debris from the body.

Homicide detectives and the Jackson County Medical Examiner are conducting a death investigation to confirm the body of Sanchez Muñoz and the cause of death.

The Sánchez-Muñoz shooting left one person dead (Jeremy Keenan, who died after being shot and crashing his car into a pole) and left another with serious injuries, News Nation reported.

Many other victims, including an Uber driver who was shot in the leg while driving fans to the World Cup match between Argentina and Algeria, are expected to recover.

After the shootings, police allegedly tracked Sánchez Muñoz to his family home in Independence, where a standoff ensued that lasted hours before the house caught fire.

Police initially believed Sánchez Muñoz had escaped during the fire, prompting a nationwide search led by the FBI's Kansas City field office, which offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Sánchez-Muñoz's mother and stepfather told NewsNation that their son had recently shown signs of a mental health problem, and his mother said she believed it might be schizophrenia.

His mother said they tried to commit him to a mental health facility, but he did not want to enter voluntarily.

Keenan's mother said her son's death had devastated her, but said she understands his alleged killer was struggling with mental health issues.

"Hopefully it sheds light on mental health," Debra Keenan told the outlet.

Police are investigating a violent confrontation involving a downtown Los Angeles street vendor after a shocking attack was captured on video and shared widely on social media.

The incident occurred near Figueroa and 7th streets, where Arabelia Martínez was working at her food stand when an argument with another woman led to a brutal physical attack.

A video posted online shows the dispute beginning at Martinez's booth.

The unidentified woman can be seen pouring hot sauce over the vendor's hot dogs, damaging the food she was selling.

Martinez then appears to throw red powder at the woman, causing a rapid escalation.

The images show the suspect advancing towards Martínez while the salesman tries to back away.

Moments later, the couple falls to the ground, where the woman repeatedly punches Martínez in the back of the head.

Several passersby run in and try to separate the two women.

But the violence does not end there.

As Martinez is helped to his feet and begins to walk away, the video shows the woman running up behind him and launching a second attack.

The suspect appears to punch Martinez in the head and face before grabbing her by the hair and dragging her back to the ground as horrified witnesses watch.

The victim's family believes the confrontation may have been motivated by racism.

Martinez's son said the woman began harassing his mother while she was selling food, allegedly telling her to go back to Mexico and making other racist comments before the attack.

In the wake of the assault, Martinez's family launched a GoFundMe campaign that had raised more than $97,000 toward its $120,000 goal as of Wednesday.

“My name is Constantino García and I am raising funds for my mom, Arabelia Martínez, a beautiful, hard-working street vendor in downtown Los Angeles who was tragically attacked earlier this week,” García wrote on the fundraising page.

He said the money would help cover therapy, recovery time away from work and replacement of damaged equipment and supplies.

“The assault not only left her physically and emotionally shaken, but also resulted in damage to the items she works so hard to maintain,” García wrote.

Witness Sebastián Gutiérrez, an Uber Eats delivery driver, said the attack was one of the worst incidents he has seen in the area.

"It was horrible.

It really made me angry to witness that.

Worse than many others.

I've seen other times people being attacked, and everything here, but it really feels so bad.

It's like there was no reason to do that at all," Gutierrez told ABC7.

Gutierrez said the woman appeared to be suffering from mental health issues or possibly being under the influence of alcohol.

"And then I see her suddenly push every item out of at least one of these vendor stands.

Dozens of cups of fruit, an entire cart of hot dogs," he said.

Authorities have not announced any arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

This is the terrifying moment a California fisherwoman was swept into the ocean by a powerful sneaker wave.

Bae Cadotte, a 47-year-old Pacifica resident, was fishing off the beach south of the Pacifica Pier on Tuesday when the water hit, knocking her over and dragging her about 30 feet from shore.

A webcam captured the terrifying moment when the wave hit Cadotte and swept her into the surf.

"I felt like I was spinning around in a washing machine," Cadotte told ABC.

She described the wave coming without warning and said she immediately realized the danger she was in.

“It just swallowed me up,” he said.

"At that moment I knew she had come, I was going in.

She was going to get me.

There's no way I'm getting out of this." Carried away by the water, Cadotte decided not to fight the immense force of the wave and instead surrendered her fate to a higher power.

“I closed my eyes, I said a prayer: God, if this is your will, I understand, but please don't let me leave my son,” she said.

Cadotte eventually resurfaced after several minutes in the water.

Nearby fishermen rushed to help her, throwing her a rope and pulling her back to shore.

“Thank you for risking your life to save mine,” he told them later.

First responders arrived shortly after and took Cadotte to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia.

Other ocean rescues have also been reported recently.

A mother and her daughter were swept into the waves at Baker Beach in San Francisco, but were rescued.

Two Bay Area college students died after being swept into the ocean in Santa Cruz.

In Southern California, the danger also became clear after the body of 5-year-old Amada Mia Brown was recovered after a powerful wave swept her family into the ocean in Laguna Beach.

These waves are especially common along steep, deep coastlines, including parts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

Sneaker waves are unusually large coastal waves that can emerge on a beach much higher than expected.

They are difficult to predict and can appear even on calm, sunny days without warning.

Some researchers estimate that about three out of every 10,000 waves in the ocean reach “rogue wave” or sneaker wave status.

Former mob hitman turned suburban New Jersey councilman John Alite has been arrested on loan sharking charges.

The 63-year-old former Gambino family enforcer and former confidant of John Gotti Jr.

was arrested Friday on multiple charges of theft by racketeering, corporate misconduct, loan sharking and terroristic threats, according to the New Jersey State Attorney General.

Wild Ring camera footage from the moments before the arrest showed a squad of New Jersey police officers in SWAT gear marching down the quiet street of Englishtown, New Jersey, shortly after 5 a.m., on their way to Alite's home.

Stephen Locrotondo, 67, of Bridgewater New Jersey, was also arrested and charged with loan sharking and conspiracy as part of the alleged scheme.

"Our office is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses behave fairly and lawfully.

The conduct alleged in this case was anything but, and we will work to hold those who cheat and steal accountable," Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said in a statement Saturday.

The former hitman, who handled six murders and many other serious crimes in 2008, had apparently turned the page and was appointed to a vacant Englishtown council seat last year.

"You know what? I can really do some good.

I've already had a bad past and I'm here to redeem my whole life, and I'd like to go out and do everything in a positive way," Alite told The Post after being appointed in March 2025.

His fellow Englishtown City Council members expressed surprise that Alite had been detained by state police.

"I have absolutely no idea what this is about, so I can't comment.

I can tell you I'm shocked because he's been an excellent citizen and council member," Councilwoman Janet Leonardis told NJ.com.

Englishtown Mayor Daniel Francisco also refrained from jumping to conclusions and expressed lukewarm support for Alite.

"Every American has the right to due process, including John.

I will not rush to judgment before the facts are known, and he has the right to a presumption of innocence while the judicial process unfolds," Francisco told NJ.com.

Alite was sentenced to 10 years in 2011, but was released in 2012 on supervised release after becoming a cooperating witness.

Type 2 diabetes patients taking Ozempic and Wegovy may be getting an unexpected benefit: a little more courage.

A new study suggests that semaglutide, the active ingredient in hit weight-loss drugs, could help strengthen bones in those with type 2 diabetes, even while shedding pounds, according to a report in Science Daily.

Researchers found that patients with type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide were 15% less likely to suffer bone fractures than patients using other popular weight-loss medications.

This is a surprising turn, as many experts were concerned that rapid weight loss could leave bones more brittle.

Semaglutide users not only lost more weight than patients taking competing treatments, but they also appeared to be less likely to break a bone, said the researchers, led by Dr.

Jairo Noreña, a former endocrinology fellow at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California.

The research team examined the medical records of more than 59,000 adults with type 2 diabetes.

Among the 26,324 semaglutide users, the researchers recorded 794 fractures.

The comparison group (33,555 patients taking other weight-loss medications) suffered a whopping 1,045 fractures.

The findings were released at ENDO 2026, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Chicago, which took place June 13-16.

The conference brought together thousands of professionals in hormonal science and medicine.

The findings have real-world implications, particularly for the millions of older adults taking weight-loss medications who may already be at risk for bone loss.

"Bone fractures are painful, costly and can seriously affect quality of life, especially as people age," Noreña said.

"We hope this study encourages monitoring of bone health in weight loss programs.

This work is an important first step toward understanding the impact of semaglutide-induced weight loss on bone health in patients with type 2 diabetes."

Long before Jeffrey Epstein became the world's most famous sex offender, he committed an act that foreshadowed a lifetime of manipulating women, and his first victim was his own mother.

According to a researcher examining Epstein's early years, the disgraced financier's pattern of exploiting women began decades before his sex trafficking empire collapsed.

“His mother Paula adored him,” CUNY sociology professor Thomas Volscho, who is researching a book about wealthy sex traffickers, told The Post.

"His parents were remembered as hard-working and well-loved people from a simple Brooklyn family." However, one of the first documented controversies involving Epstein centered on him leaving his family in the lurch while he was a student at New York University.

According to a May 1976 Fidelifacts report, New York University took Epstein to civil court in December 1975 after receiving an invalid tuition payment.

"He wrote a check on his mother's checking account to cover his tuition and the check bounced," Volscho told New York University's Washington Square News student newspaper.

“When NYU sent a debt collector to his address, his brother answered the door and said he had gone to Europe and then coughed up about three or four hundred dollars of the thousand-something dollars owed.” The NYU lawsuit was later settled, but the incident is an early glimpse into a pattern that would define Epstein's life.

Survivors revealed that Epstein, who dropped out of New York University without a degree and lied to potential employer Bear Stearns about his education, repeatedly used promises of admission and payment of tuition at New York University and other elite institutions to lure and control his victims, according to the House Judiciary Committee.

He offered the prospect of an education to draw young women into his orbit, and in some cases he or his associates would secure scholarships or pay tuition fees and then threaten to withdraw their funding if they did not meet his demands.

As despicable as Epstein's manipulation tactics were, he was the grand master of them.

Even after his mother died, he exploited her for his own benefit.

On August 9, 2019, after meeting with his attorneys at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center, prison staff allowed Epstein to make, in violation of policy, an unrecorded, unmonitored phone call before he was returned to his cell, according to a report from the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General.

Epstein said he was calling his mother, Paula Epstein, but she had been dead for 15 years.

Three hikers died from apparent heat-related illnesses in the Grand Canyon on two separate days last week in the canyon's interior, where temperatures can exceed 109 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade during the midday hours, federal officials said Friday.

A 72-year-old man became sick from the heat on June 12 while hiking the South Kaibab Trail and died before rescue crews could reach him.

Four days later, a 67-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman also appeared to suffer heat-related illnesses while hiking the North Kaibab Trail and died before help arrived, the U.S.

Willard Gary Black, 85, has been charged with second-degree murder in the Wednesday shooting death of Robert Roger Arguelles, who was struck in the chest and back, Queen City News reported.

Court records show that that same day, Black was ordered to pay Arguelles $310,882.74 after a contract dispute between the two men, Court TV reported.

An unpaid City Council intern claimed she was fired after demanding that she and her co-workers be paid $32 an hour, nearly double the Big Apple's current minimum wage.

Mina Farahmand, a legislative intern in Manhattan Councilman Harvey Epstein's office, said she was fired Wednesday after she sent Council President Julie Menin a petition signed by 32 of her peers seeking “a living wage,” City & State reported.

“I was fired from @NYCCouncil yesterday for organizing as an unpaid intern after I sent a petition to the president on Tuesday to pay all interns,” Farahmand said in an X post on Thursday.

The petition called for “the creation of a dedicated fund to ensure that all unpaid interns working in council members' offices can receive a living wage of $32 an hour,” City & State reported in its Heard About Town newsletter.

There are 378 law students in UC Berkeley's Disabled Students Program, about a third of enrollment.

This marks a huge change from just five years ago, when only 3% of Berkeley graduate students reported having a disability.

Across the university, the number of students in the disability program has steadily increased, rising from 4,153 in 2020 to 5,711 last year.

The school claims to be "one of the first campuses in the US to begin welcoming students with disabilities." The main types of disabilities on campus are classified as psychological or emotional disorders, as well as ADHD.

The number of claims for physical disability is significantly lower.

Critics say the figures show a “farce” on the part of students to take advantage of educators' thoughtful considerations to gain an advantage in school.

The numbers are absurd, said Andrew Testerman, a law school graduate who examined the numbers.

“At Berkeley Law, there are more disabled law students than male law students,” said Berkeley Law student Andrew Testerman, who analyzed the numbers.

"We are asked to believe that students at elite law schools are much more likely to have disabilities than our nation's seniors." Disability status unfairly gives students advantages, Testerman said.
